Castiel’s gelding was saddled, reined, and nickering impatiently for the long ride ahead, and he mounted her quickly, knowing that a snow storm was fast approaching, and he and the other knights would need to cover ground before the trail became lost under a blanket of merciless white.
Dean was watching from the protection of the stables, bundled up warmly against the vicious cold, and fiddling nervously with something in his hands before he approached Castiel’s horse and held it out: a piece of ragged red cloth torn from his own shirt, the shirt that Castiel loved the most on him.
The young knight stared down at the offered token, before extending his arm and allowing Dean to bind the cloth to it, as a way of keeping the memories of their passionate summer together alive, and as a reminder that Castiel had someone special, someone loving, to return home to when his duties to the kingdom were finally completed.
